there is a bit of confusion when it comes to print sizing. i didn’t understand it until I started my photography business! therefore, i’m going to attempt to explain what’s up:

digital cameras produce files that have an aspect ratio (native ratio) of 2:3, which is the relationship of an image’s width to its height, or its proportions. however, two of the most common photo print sizes (5×7 and 8×10) have a different aspect ratio. since 4×6 prints have a 2:3, they do not need to be cropped, however both a 5×7 and an 8×10 do not have 2:3 ratio, so they need to be cropped to make that size print.

when considering these print ratios, you must consider the fact that some portions of your original image may have tops, bottoms, or sides cut off in the final crop.

so remember, native ratio is 2:3 (4×6, 6×9, 8×12, 10×15, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30)

not native ratio sizes –  5×7, 8×10, 11×14, 16×20
